A Call to Compassion and Generosity


In the hustle and bustle of Christmas shopping, December 3rd provides a refreshing opportunity to pause and reflect on a critical aspect of the season—giving.

Giving Tuesday serves as a reminder of the power of generosity in fulfilling God’s command to care for others. The Bible teaches us that our giving is an expression of love and obedience to God’s will. As Jesus said:

“Inasmuch as you did it to one of the least of these My brethren, you did it to Me.” (Matthew 25:40)

Whether it’s offering financial support, volunteering time, or providing items to those in need, our acts of kindness reflect Christ’s love.

JOY Radio’s James Kurtis spoke with Aretha Kahloo, Director of Operations for Haven on the Queensway – a non-profit organization in Etobicoke with the goal of enhancing life for those in need – who listed food insecurity as a rising concern.

“We all know that our highest budget [allocation] is paying rent,” Kahloo said. “…often times, unfortunately, when given the choice between paying rent and food – people sacrifice their need for food.”

Haven on the Queensway has seen an incredible increase in their food bank services. With assistance from generous contributors – they are dedicated to providing support for hungry individuals and families. In addition to their food bank, Haven on the Queensway is uplifting communities with four other incredible programs:

• First Care – providing essential resources to pregnant women and parents of newborns up to six months.

• Haven’s Closet – offering seasonal clothing free of charge for individuals and families facing crisis.

• Haven Helping Seniors – extending a variety of support to seniors who may be isolated or facing challenging circumstances.

• Hope with Wheels – a mobile outreach program serving the needs of people experiencing homelessness in downtown Toronto and South Etobicoke.

As 2 Corinthians 9:7 reminds us,

“So let each one give as he purposes in his heart, not grudgingly or of necessity; for God loves a cheerful giver.”
